What is the best-selling game of all time? It isn’t the one with the best graphics, music, or even gameplay, just the most addictiveness: Tetris has sold more than 170 million copies on multiple platforms since 1984, despite original creator Alexey Pajitov being largely unpaid for his creation. Tetris has been available on almost every platform and is hugely popular on the Game Boy. For better or for worse, console gaming has been the public’s favorite way to play video games. So what is the highest-selling video game for each major console? We’ve examined the top-selling video games on each of the highest-selling video game console options since the 1980s. Surprisingly, some of the best-selling video games of all time have been relatively recent, with 83 million copies of Wii Sports selling on the Wii. But very recently, console gaming has gotten more diverse, with fewer games reaching these high numbers. The top-selling Wii U games don’t break 8 million in sales, the best-selling PS4 games are at around 8.7 million, and the numbers are far lower for Xbox One. Best-selling games aren’t always the most popular video games looking back, but games like Pac-Man, Super Mario Brothers, and installments of the Halo series are still considered classics.
